Why We Chose NMC

Nickel, manganese, cobalt — and the argument for putting them in a scooter.

Every cell chemistry is a set of compromises wearing a different hat. NMC is the one whose compromises we were willing to live with.

The DLX GOLD carries a lithium-ion NMC pack; so does the DLX (LS), at 2.4 kilowatt-hours. NMC stands for nickel manganese cobalt — the three metals in the cathode. The mix is what you are really choosing when you choose a chemistry.

Energy density is the whole argument

NMC stores more energy per kilogram than the alternatives commonly used at this price point. On a scooter, where every kilogram is carried by the rider through every corner and paid for in range, that is not a marginal benefit. It is the benefit.

The DLX GOLD has a kerb weight of 102 kg and a claimed range of 140 kilometres. Those two numbers exist in the same sentence because of the chemistry. A lead-acid pack of equivalent energy would not fit in the space under the seat, and if it did, you would feel it at every set of lights.

A heavier pack does not just cost you range. It costs you range and then charges you interest, every time you accelerate.

What NMC asks for in return

It asks to be looked after. NMC has a narrower comfortable operating window than the more forgiving chemistries, which is exactly why the pack is built around a battery management system rather than the other way round. The BMS watches cell voltages, keeps the pack balanced, and refuses charge or discharge outside the safe envelope.

This is why the EZ is offered with a choice — lead acid or lithium-ion, at 60V and 26, 30 or 40 amp-hours. Different buyer, different duty cycle, different honest answer.

The warranty is the real statement

We warrant the lithium-ion pack for three years. The motor, controller, converter and charger carry one. That gap is deliberate and it is the most direct thing we can tell you about how long we expect the cells to last: longer than everything bolted around them.
